Water is the key to growth. People and plants need it. So do businesses and economies.
Today, on World Water Day, TechnoServe recognizes that water is central to everything we do. The theme of this World Water Day is “Water and Food Security,” which highlights the importance of water for healthy crops and well-nourished families. TechnoServe works to promote smart and sustainable solutions to water challenges in poor communities. For example:
In the Sidama region of Ethiopia, coffee is a vital source of income. But coffee processing can place enormous strain on the region’s limited water resources. In partnership with Mother Parkers Tea & Coffee, TechnoServe is helping 17 coffee wet mills to plant vetiver grass wetlands that will naturally treat and filter waste water from coffee processing. This program will help improve water quality for communities and demonstrate a sustainable model for other wet mills in the region.
- In Nicaragua, with support from the U.S. Agency for International Development, TechnoServe has helped vegetable farmer cooperatives install more than 150 drip irrigation systems covering about 560 acres. These systems let vegetable growers optimize water usage for their crops. TechnoServe has also helped more than 450 families in several Nicaraguan communities to access safe drinking water.
These are just a few of the ways in which TechnoServe is helping communities respond to water issues. The challenges will only intensify in the coming years as the world’s population grows and puts pressure on scarce natural resources. TechnoServe will continue to seek ways to promote a sustainable water future for the developing world.
