Description 

Raw Cashew Nut (RCN) production in Mozambique needs to increase significantly, and yield improvements are critical to achieve this. Pesticide spraying has the potential to boost yields from the current 3 kg/tree to 15kg/tree. Currently, almost all spraying is dependent on Mozambique’s IAM subsidized scheme, which only reaches around 20% of productive trees, does not result in significant yield improvements, and crowds out the private sector. The solution lies in transitioning to commercially viable input provision. This will require careful assessment of a number of critical factors on both the supply and demand sides, and an integrated approach that addresses the concerns of a range of stakeholders.

Project goal: To contribute to the development of the private sector’s market of distribution of inputs for spraying services.

Project interventions:

  • Over 6074 famers received spraying services through new sprayers;
  • 6 modules of business management and agronomic developed by the project to facilitate best practice learning of the sprayers;
  • 200 Sprayers trained on business and gronomic modules received atomizers;
  • 10 groups of sprayers were formed, with 125 members per group in the ratio of 13 members per group sprayers
  • 10 agro-input dealers engaged in the pilot phase;
