A partnership between TechnoServe, The Coca-Cola Company, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Project Nurture helped more than 50,000 fruit farmers in East Africa increase their incomes by an average of 142 percent.
Featured Partnership
Project Nurture
Despite agriculture’s central role in East African economies, many farmers do not earn a consistent and reliable income. Domestic fruit value chains in Kenya and Uganda are plagued by various inefficiencies, resulting in low production, sales volume and income for smallholder fruit producers, trapping families and communities in poverty.
TechnoServe partnered with The Coca-Cola Company and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to help more than 50,000 small-scale mango and passion fruit farmers in Kenya and Uganda double their fruit incomes. The Project Nurture initiative worked with farmers to identify new market opportunities, improve productivity and develop strong farmer business groups.
The project, which won the prestigious P3 Impact Award for outstanding public-private partnerships, drew on the expertise and incentives of each partner in order to fundamentally improve local supply chains to benefit smallholder farmers.
