Regenerative Practices in the Food Processing Sector: Promoting Climate Action and Business Gains
This white paper highlights how adopting regenerative practices in the food processing sector can strengthen climate resilience while delivering tangible business benefits.
Developed through the African Improved Nutritious Foods Processing (AINFP) program, implemented by TechnoServe in partnership with USAID and Partners in Food Solutions, this paper examines how food processors across East and Southern Africa are responding to climate risks. It shows that while food systems are increasingly vulnerable to rising temperatures, extreme weather, and resource scarcity, food processors also play a central role in driving solutions by connecting producers to markets and influencing how food is produced, processed, and consumed.
The findings highlight practical opportunities for food processors to adopt regenerative business practices across areas such as waste management, water use, energy efficiency, and sustainable sourcing. These approaches can reduce costs, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen supply chain resilience, while also contributing to climate mitigation and adaptation. At the same time, adoption remains constrained by barriers including limited access to finance, technical expertise, and the need to clearly demonstrate the business case for investment.
