Our monthly photo series highlights the beauty and emotion in the lives of our clients around the world. This month, we're celebrating the hardworking women who build better lives for themselves, their families and communities.

Celebrating Women: Three stories of entrepreneurship, farming, and leadership

Since 1978, every March has been celebrated as International Women’s History Month, with March 8 being honored as International Women’s Day. This month, our photos celebrate the incredible women around the world who are thriving as farmers, entrepreneurs, and examples of potential turned into possibility.

At TechnoServe, every month is an opportunity to increase economic opportunities for women because we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to build a better life. As a global nonprofit, we are proud to give women around the world the skills, connections, and confidence they need to build better futures for themselves, their families, and their communities.

Amony Irene’s story—skills to start a metalworking enterprise

Meet Amony Irene. She is the proud owner of Ibinonga Metal Work and Fabrication. While she had valuable skills as a metal worker, Amony struggled to break into the male-dominated industry. That changed when she joined a TechnoServe program that provided her with skills like entrepreneurship, business planning, and finance. It created a new sense of confidence that inspired Amony to invest in her own enterprise. She trained her husband in metal work, and now the couple runs Ibinonga together as a team. Read her story.

Archana Stalin—helping 300+ farmers reach 10,000+ families

This year, as the world also celebrates the International Year of the Woman Farmer, we are delighted to share the success of farmers like Archana Stalin. The award-winning client of our Greenr project in India founded her business on a model of collective success. She started myHarvest Farms with her husband Stalin Kalidoss to connect more than 300 farmers who grow and sell organic products with a market of over 10,000 families. There are wins for everyone: farmers benefit from strong market linkages, buyers gain access to fresh and nutritious food, and nature is protected through sustainable agricultural practices.

Flora Ortíz—policies that improved retention and growth

Flora Ortíz ran a small bakery in Nicaragua that produced rosquillas, but high staff turnover threatened her growth. After participating in TechnoServe’s Impulsa tu Empresa project, she adopted policies to reduce inequality. It gave people the opportunity to participate more fully in the workplace through initiatives like maternity and paternity benefits beyond legal requirements. She also trained managers and expanded advancement opportunities for both women and men. The investment in their well-being paid off. Staff turnover dropped and business grew, earning Flora international recognition. “It’s like a dream,” she said.
