Nigeria’s recycling sector is at an inflection point.

The country generates 500,000 metric tons of PET plastic waste annually, most of it uncollected or unrecycled. Closing that gap will require looking beyond collection efficiency to address deep structural bottlenecks across the entire value chain.

Our new study identifies three: 

• Collectors lack affordable transport options to move material
• Aggregators lack access to equipment and working capital 
• Recyclers struggle to secure a consistent supply of clean feedstock

With rising plastic consumption and new regulations driving domestic demand for recycled PET (rPET), a window has opened to boost recycling rates and transform local livelihoods.
