This white paper examines the evolving role of food processors in shaping diets and improving nutrition across Sub-Saharan Africa.

Developed through the African Improved Nutritious Foods Processing (AINFP) program, implemented by TechnoServe in partnership with USAID and Partners in Food Solutions, this paper explores how the food processing sector can both positively and negatively influence diets. It highlights the sector’s potential to improve access to safe, nutritious foods, while also acknowledging the rise of ultra-processed foods and their contribution to the growing double burden of malnutrition.

The findings show that food processors can play a critical role in improving diets by developing fortified and nutrient-rich products, extending shelf life to reduce food loss, and making nutritious foods more convenient, affordable, and appealing to consumers. At the same time, the sector’s growth requires intentional strategies to ensure it contributes to healthier food systems rather than increasing the availability of foods high in salt, sugar, and fats.
