Our monthly photo series highlights the beauty and emotion in the lives of our clients around the world.

In honor of Labor Day, a US holiday that celebrates the social and economic achievements of American workers, this month we’re featuring farmers from around the world harvesting the fruit of their labor.

For nearly 60 years, TechnoServe has worked with smallholder farmers to improve the quality and quantity of their crops, access crucial finance and supplies, and sell to better buyers at higher prices. With access to new skills, connections, and confidence, farmers, their families, and communities can flourish.

In the vineyards of Maharashtra, India, women farmers carefully tend to clusters of export-quality grapes. They are part of thousands of farmers who are embracing regenerative farming practices through a Walmart Foundation–funded project. The labor of replacing chemical fertilizers and herbicides with natural, organic alternatives is paying off with lower costs, improved yields, and crops that command higher prices in the market.

Beyond the harvest, the project is also cultivating leadership. Supporting women to increase their incomes and take on decision-making roles within farmer producer companies owned and run by farmers themselves. The result is not only healthier soil and stronger harvests, but stronger communities, too. Read more

In Tanzania’s Mbeya region, Sauda Ilomo and her husband, Asajile Mwambande, beam with pride as they harvest a ripe cacao pod from their family farm—a tangible fruit of their labor. They are members of the Mabubu Farmer Business Group, where they’ve gained vital skills through TechnoServe’s training on good agricultural practices and business skills.

By ensuring women farmers like Sauda have equal access to training and leadership opportunities, the program helped strengthen not just individual farms but entire communities. The farmer business group that Sauda helps lead is among the highest-performing cocoa cooperatives in Tanzania, a testament to what’s possible when farmers are given the tools and opportunities to thrive.

In Honduras, Antonio and his wife harvest ripe red coffee cherries on their family farm. They are among 2,000 smallholder farmers in El Paraíso and Intibucá who strengthened their livelihoods through TechnoServe’s training on good agricultural practices and farm business management.

The project improved coffee yields and quality, opening new markets for farmers. It also helped families diversify into staple grains and other cash crops. Through their labor, farmers like Antonio are creating more food security, stronger incomes, and greater resilience across coffee-farming communities.
