TechnoServe Statement on World Youth Skills Day: ‘Soft Skills’ Are Critical for Ensuring that Youth Can Thrive in Emerging Economic Sectors

The senior director for the Global Practice for Women and Youth highlighted TechnoServe’s work to help young people develop a range of capabilities

ARLINGTON, VA (July 16, 2025) – Yesterday on World Youth Skills Day, Cristina Manfre, TechnoServe’s senior director for the Global Practice for Women and Youth, issued the following statement:

“This year’s theme for World Youth Skills Day–Youth empowerment through AI and digital skills–is a call to action to enable youth to lead their own futures and emerging sectors of the economy. Whether it is building the capacity of young people to start successful businesses in the circular economy or harness new technologies like AI, technical skills are extremely important in this effort.

However, just as critical are soft skills, like emotional intelligence and leadership. For example, in Kenya, the BlueBiz Youth Advisory Council is helping young women and men to develop their self-awareness, emotional regulation, and empathy–crucial tools they will need as leaders in the emerging blue economy.

As governments, the private sector, and civil society work to support the economic inclusion and empowerment of young people, we cannot lose sight of the importance of these skills, and we must strive to include them in our training and support.”
