KFI and TechnoServe Launch Millers for Nutrition in Indonesia to Strengthen the Nutrition Security of the Nation
Representatives from Indonesia's food sector, government, and civil society have come together to support fortification and food quality
JAKARTA, INDONESIA (June 12, 2025) — At a convening hosted today by the Indonesian Nutrition Foundation for Food Fortification (KFI) and TechnoServe, partners announced the launch of Millers for Nutrition in Indonesia. Millers for Nutrition is a coalition to help milling businesses improve fortification practices and enhance the nutritional quality of the staple food they produce for the local population.
The Need for Large-Scale Food Fortification in Indonesia
The Asta Cita, as part of the National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) 2025-2029, is a strategic plan that outlines Indonesia’s development goals for the next five years. It is part of the broader Golden Indonesia 2045 vision, aiming to achieve a sovereign, progressive, and sustainable nation.
One of the problems faced in realizing this vision is micronutrients deficiencies whose prevalence is still quite high, including iron deficiency anemia, iodine deficiency and vitamin A deficiency. These deficiency conditions have the potential to increase maternal and child mortality rates, inhibit children’s growth and development and intelligence, worsen infectious diseases, and reduce productivity and the potential for healthy living.
It has been reported that mandatory food fortification is the most effective and efficient in combating micro-nutrients deficiencies and gives relatively high return on investment. The National Long-Term Development Plan (RPJPN) 2025-2045 has stipulated LSFF as one of the programs to improve health and nutritional status of the population.
Fortification is the process of adding essential vitamins and minerals to staple foods to address micronutrient deficiencies, a challenge affecting over 3 billion people globally. These deficiencies undermine productivity, strain healthcare systems, and slow economic development. Food fortification is a proven, cost-effective solution to help national populations access more nutritious diets without changing consumption patterns.
Meeting to Promote Large-Scale Food Fortification in Indonesia
This meeting has an objective to strengthen partnership among stakeholders in improving the quality of food fortification program that benefit the society while enhancing business sustainability.
Millers for Nutrition, a global coalition of food fortification stakeholders, has officially launched in Indonesia. The coalition is dedicated to supporting millers in fortifying staple foods, wheat flour, edible oil, and rice with essential micronutrients to improve national nutrition outcomes. The launch took place during the “Large Scale Food Fortification (LSFF) for Health, Nutrition Status and Productivity” convening, co-hosted by the Indonesian Nutrition Foundation for Food Fortification (KFI) and TechnoServe. Representatives from the Government of Indonesia and leading industry players attended the event, including the Ministry of the National Development Planning of the Republic of Indonesia (BAPPENAS), the National Food Agency, the State Logistics Agency (BULOG), and the national wheat flour, edible oil and rice millers associations.
KFI is the only and most respected food fortification foundation in Indonesia, consisting of senior experts in the field and distinguished former government policymakers. KFI and Miller for Nutrition share a similar concern on the best quality and sustainability of LSFF.
Millers for Nutrition currently operates in eight countries across Africa and Asia: Bangladesh, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Tanzania. The coalition’s innovative approach connects Strategic Fortification Partners, technical experts, and other ecosystem partners to deliver best-in-class technical assistance and business advisory services. Through this model, millers can strengthen food quality, enhance operational competitiveness, and unlock new market opportunities. Champion millers are also recognized through media visibility and high-profile events.
“We are thrilled to introduce Millers for Nutrition in Indonesia,” said Monojit Indra, Senior Practice Leader TechnoServe & Program Leader, Millers for Nutrition Asia. “We want to unite passionate stakeholders to support Indonesian Millers and food processors in achieving fortification excellence and driving meaningful change in the battle against malnutrition. Together, we can transform the future of nutrition in Indonesia”.
Deputy for Development of Human, Society, and Cultural Affairs, Ministry of National Development Planning of the Republic of Indonesia (BAPPENAS), Amich Alhumami, MA, M.Ed, PhD, delivered a keynote address highlighting Indonesia’s nutritional landscape and the crucial role of fortified foods in enhancing the country’s health and nutritional status.
“The mandatory fortification program has become a shared commitment, not only at the national level, but also internationally,” said Amich in a speech delivered by the Director of Public Health and Nutrition of the Ministry of PPN/Bappenas Diah Lenggogeni.
Furthermore, Amich acknowledged that one of the problems faced in human resource development is the lack of micronutrients, the prevalence of which is still quite high. This is a challenge for all stakeholders, including the government, private sector, non-governmental organizations, and academics.
“Therefore, the Large-Scale Food Fortification program requires a synergistic partnership between the government, food industry, and supporting organizations such as professional/academic organizations, development partners, NGOs in the fields of health, nutrition and fortification,” he said.
A central panel featured representatives from edible oil, wheat flour, and rice industry associations, who discussed challenges and opportunities related to implementing Indonesia’s food fortification standards. The event concluded with awards, presented by Strategic Fortification Partners, recognizing high-performing millers and associations for their commitment to delivering fortified staple foods and improving the country’s nutrition profile.
