ROSSLYN, VA (November 30, 2023)  – The following statement was issued by TechnoServe’s CEO Will Warshauer as the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) gets underway in Dubai from today:

“As the ferocity of climate change upends fragile food systems around the world, TechnoServe is at COP28 to get funders and decision-makers to recognize the tremendous potential that smallholder farmers around the world have to be part of climate solutions

“Agri-food systems are currently responsible for one-third of global emissions, which is both a challenge and an opportunity. A climate-positive future is still within reach, but to achieve it, we must transform the way the world grows food.

“Smallholder farmers number in the hundreds of millions. Their ability to be resilient and thrive protects not only their livelihoods but also food security for billions more.

“TechnoServe has over five decades of experience working with smallholder farmers and small business owners around the world. We know transformation is possible if the world pushes forward at COP28 to build credibility, increase capacity, and align players at scale.

“Our mission to end global poverty depends on healthy soils, clean air, plentiful waters, and a stable climate. There is no time like the present and no other global forum that gives the world an opportunity to transform an entire sector. Let’s make the most of that potential at COP28.”
