Chile has a robust and diverse national economy, but its benefits are far from equally distributed. The country has one of the highest levels of income inequality in the world, leading to social vulnerability.

TechnoServe is a leader in Chile’s entrepreneurship development sector. Since 2008, we have supported over 3,000 enterprising people across 8 regions of the country, helping them to develop business skills, build market linkages, and access funding. In 2017 alone, over 900 micro- and small business owners – 64 percent of whom are women – benefited from TechnoServe’s work, creating more than $7. million in increased financial wages and income. TechnoServe has developed strong relationships with public and private partners, working across various sectors – such as mining, energy, and banking – to generate shared value by strengthening entrepreneurship and employability skills, developing local procurement systems, and increasing financial inclusion.

On The Ground

Financial Inclusion for Small Business Owners

Impulsa Tu Empresa (ITE) Chile was the nation’s first successful financial inclusion intervention for low-income micro business owners. Funded by MetLife Foundation, the project helped micro business owners to improve their managerial skills through six months of business training, while also improving their understanding and use of financial services. In 2015, TechnoServe conducted a study based on interviews and data from ITE participants, compiling lessons learned and recommendations to inform the development sector and policy decision-making around small business development and financial inclusion. From 2014 to 2016, ITE Chile supported more than 700 micro business owners in Santiago and Valparaíso, helping them to increase their sales by an average of 50 percent and to improve their savings by 40 percent.

Increasing Sales for Small and Growing Businesses

In 2011, TechnoServe began a partnership with Anglo American’s EMERGE program, which was launched in 2006 to accelerate of micro and small businesses in the communities surrounding Anglo American mining operations in Chile. The program helps local entrepreneurs to launch and grow profitable businesses by providing them with tailored business mentoring, one-on-one advisory support, online training, and access to finance. In 2016, the program began offering the opportunity for participating businesses to enter the supply chains of various large companies throughout the country, connecting them with a sustainable market for their goods and services. By providing these emerging business leaders with the financing, and managerial and business skills they need to succeed, the program has helped more than 1,300 businesses to increase their sales by a range of 30 percent to more than 100 percent to date.
