Chile has a robust and diverse national economy, but its benefits are far from equally distributed. The country has one of the highest levels of income inequality in the world, which leads to social vulnerability. From 1996 to 2006, nearly 30 percent of households were considered poor during some period of time.

TechnoServe is implementing entrepreneurship development projects in Chile with the support of private and public partners. The programs are helping high potential small and growing businesses to increase sales, jobs and wages in the local community.

TechnoServe Chile has promoted seven business acceleration processes and provided long term business consulting, assisting more than 500 businesses in total across a variety of sectors, such as agro-industry, manufacturing, health, services and tourism. The last generation of businesses assisted doubled their sales on average by the end of 2012, increasing salaries and purchases to hundreds of employees and micro suppliers in their communities.

Building Strong Businesses

Between 2008 and 2011, TechnoServe implemented the business plan competition program Idea Tu Empresa in the Santiago Metropolitan Region, Valparaiso and Concepción. Entrepreneurs with new business ideas and already existing businesses received customized consulting and workshops on topics ranging from negotiation to marketing strategies. Participants also received access to finance through seed capital or credit solutions, allowing them to increase the volume of their operations.

Promoting Rural Enterprise

TechnoServe Chile led the Business Capacities and Competences Development Program in vulnerable communities of the Biobío Region between 2010 and 2011. Consultants provided business training and workshops to more than 50 participants to help them identify business opportunities. As a result, 35 companies were developed, including a cooperative of honey producers that exported its products to Europe.

Doubling Sales for Small and Growing Businesses

TechnoServe supports the development of high potential small and growing businesses (SGBs) located in the surrounding communities of the Anglo American mining company’s five operations.
