Chile has a robust and diverse national economy, but its benefits are far from equally distributed. The country has one of the highest levels of income inequality in the world, which leads to social vulnerability. From 1996 to 2006, nearly 30 percent of households were considered poor during some period of time.

TechnoServe is implementing entrepreneurship development projects in Chile with the support of private and public partners. The programs are helping high potential small and growing businesses to increase sales, jobs and wages in the local community.

On The Ground

Financial Inclusion for Small Business Owners

Impulsa Tu Empresa (ITE) is the first successful financial inclusion intervention for low-income micro business owners in Chile. The project began in 2014, funded by MetLife Foundation, helps micro business owners to improve their managerial practices, develop a better understanding of financial products and services and facilitate the adoption of financial products and services that can help them to improve their enterprise performance and life quality. Each cohort has shown a 50 percent average increase sales, over 40 percent improvement on saving capacity and higher usage and adoption of financial products and services. ITE has supported more than 700 micro business owners and there are plans to scale the program in the following years.

Increasing Sales for Small and Growing Businesses

The objective of EMERGE program, created by Anglo American, is the acceleration of micro and small businesses in the communities surrounding Anglo American operations in Chile. The program began in the 2006, and since 2011 the program has been operated by Anglo American in alliance with TechnoServe. The program provides business mentoring, one on one advisory support, on-line training, workshops and access to financing. Starting 2016 the program additionally offers the opportunity to be part of the procurement chain for various large companies in the country. This program is differentiated by the focus on installing managerial capacities rather than providing funding and includes a segmented offering according to the needs of each segment. Segments are based on size of the business. So far the program has worked with more than 1,300 participants, which have increased sales by a range of 30 percent to more than 100 percent.
