Rwanda
One of Africa's most densely populated and least urbanized countries, Rwanda has few natural resources and minimal industry. Hundreds of thousands of Rwandans died in the tragic civil war and genocide of the 1990s and the country's economy was destroyed. But in recent years hope and opportunity are beginning to replace despair and poverty. Recognizing that the fertile soils and mountain climates of this landlocked country make it ideal for producing high-quality coffee, TechnoServe is helping Rwanda revitalize its coffee industry (focused on high-value specialty coffee), to create a sustainable economic base that will improve the standard of living for Rwandan families and their communities.

Building Businesses and Industries
Agriculture & Agribusiness › Coffee
As part of its regional Coffee Initiative, TechnoServe is helping small-scale farmers increase their incomes by producing higher-quality coffee for the lucrative specialty coffee market. We help farmers to: obtain credit; purchase and install efficient wet mills; improve existing mills; and improve their farming and business management practices. TechnoServe also provides quality coffee assessment ("cupping") training.
