Poland
Starting with the Solidarity movement in the 1980s, Poland has struggled to free itself of its post-WWII Soviet domination. To facilitate the private-sector business growth needed for the country to overcome this legacy, TechnoServe co-founded the non-profit Center for Business Promotion and Entrepreneurship in Sandomierz, a regional center in the rural Southeast. Now a nationally respected NGO and a TechnoServe affiliate, the center offers a range of services to entrepreneurs, local non-profits and governments, and operates a loan fund to support business start-ups. Operating from its base and five satellite offices, the center finances almost a third of its work with profits from its hotel/restaurant and conference center.
