India
Sixty years after independence, India's booming urban economy – based on high-tech, manufacturing, textiles and services – has created new opportunities for millions. But some 250 million Indians continue to live in rural poverty. Two-thirds of India's 1.1 billion people depend on agriculture for their incomes, primarily at a small-scale or subsistence level. TechnoServe is: working to raise the incomes of about five million rural poor people in eight states through livestock development; setting up a social innovation center to incubate small and medium enterprises and to identify and nurture entrepreneurs and help them get their products to market; and helping set up Agrimarts (collection centers) to link small farmers to urban markets and to help them earn more for their products.
