Peru

Peru's economy has enjoyed stable growth in recent years, but underemployment remains widespread and more than half the population still lives in poverty. Since 1982, TechnoServe has helped businesses in a range of industries that have the potential to grow and create jobs and opportunity for thousands of people. Currently, we are: working with start-up businesses that supply goods and services to mining companies; helping farmers produce higher-value crops to capitalize on good market opportunities; and running a business training program to help entrepreneurs build enterprises that will stimulate broader economic growth. We are also fostering close relationships between the mines, the businesses and the greater community — creating a replicable model of inclusive local economic development.

Developing Entrepreneurs

Business Plan Competitions
TechnoServe is introducing its successful business plan competition model to help the country's emerging entrepreneurs turn good ideas into thriving, growth-oriented businesses. The program will focus on small and medium businesses that benefit people at the bottom of the economic pyramid by generating jobs and markets while also increasing the supply of high-quality, affordable goods and services. There will be an emphasis on businesses in the fields of energy, food, health, housing, basic services and information technology. We are also providing 12 months of "after care" advice and mentoring to help the entrepreneurs launch and/or expand their businesses following the competition.
Key supporters: Inter-American Development Bank (Multilateral Investment Fund), Hampshire Foundation and J.P. Morgan

Entrepreneurship Training
To help turn great ideas into strong businesses, TechnoServe is identifying and supporting young entrepreneurs, training them in subjects such as management, operational issues and accounting. We also sponsor specialized training sessions for the general business community in the impoverished mining regions of Cajamarca and Huaraz.

Other Sectors › Business Development in Mining Communities
TechnoServe is working with the Association Los Andes de Cajamarca (ALAC) (the social development arm of Minera Yanacocha, South America's largest gold producer) to help small rural enterprises capitalize on the mine's presence in the poverty-plagued area of Cajamarca. In phase one, we supported 22 local businesses, creating jobs and boosting the incomes of their local suppliers. Now we are helping a second group of 32 businesses by leveraging the supply needs of the mine and expanding into new markets. These businesses vary from dairy farming to chocolate processing to native fruit and grain products. We are also replicating this approach in the Ancash region with Minera Antamina.
