Peru
Peru's economy has enjoyed stable growth in recent years, but underemployment remains widespread and more than half the population still lives in poverty. Since 1982, TechnoServe has helped businesses in a range of industries that have the potential to grow and create jobs and opportunity for thousands of people. Currently, we are: working with start-up businesses that supply goods and services to mining companies; helping farmers produce higher-value crops to capitalize on good market opportunities; and running a business training program to help entrepreneurs build enterprises that will stimulate broader economic growth. We are also fostering close relationships between the mines, the businesses and the greater community — creating a replicable model of inclusive local economic development.

Bolstering Entrepreneurs in Peru
Through participation in TechnoServe/Peru’s business plan competition, three entrepreneurs have developed a product which benefits both the producers and buyers of animal feed.
Promoting Economic Development in the San Martín Region

The “Economic Development Alliance for San Martín” aims to accelerate the transition of the San Martín region of Peru into a sustainable, legal and prosperous economy, increasing employment and incomes while promoting good stewardship of natural resources. The program, a partnership with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and other public and private partners, will promote good agricultural practices among cocoa and coffee growers in the region. TechnoServe will help develop these industries and link farmers to better-paying markets. The program also includes a business plan competition that will identify high-potential entrepreneurs who can develop successful businesses related to cocoa and coffee.
Strengthening Capacity for Exports
“Región Exportadora” encourages exports by strengthening the Network of Institutions for Trade Support (IAC), a group of public and private organizations. This program trains advisors on key subjects to help them provide export-management support to producer organizations, small-sized producers and those with export potential. The “Región Exportadora” program seeks to establish regional trade that is economically, socially and environmentally sustainable. The program is supported by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) together with MINCETUR and PROMPERU, and is implemented by the International Trade Center (ITC) and TechnoServe.
Supporting Sustainable Development in the Ancash Region
The Ancash Competitiveness Project aims to support the sustainable development of the Ancash region, an area driven by the mining industry. The goal of the project is to improve the competitiveness of suppliers of goods and services in the area and contribute to the improvement of living conditions in local communities. The project, supported by the Antamina Mining Company, targets businesses in the agriculture, fishing, artisan products, engineering and construction sectors.
"One lesson I have learned from institutions like TechnoServe is that with concentrated effort...coupled with knowledge, finance and committed people on the ground, you will successfully advance rural economic development."
BASIL MRAMBA
Former Minister of Finance, Tanzania
