Practices: Building Businesses and Industries

Nigeria imports approximately ₦420 billion ($2.8B USD) in agricultural commodities each year, of which five crops (rice, wheat, milk, sugar and palm oil) account for 95 percent. Much of this can be grown competitively in Nigeria, providing a tremendous opportunity to create jobs and rural income through import subsitution.TechnoServe has designed Made in Nigeria to help the private sector capitalize on this opportunity.

Made in Nigeria takes the form of a competition to identify Nigeria’s agroprocessors with the greatest potential and deepest commitment to sourcing from smallholder farmers. These processors will receive incentives and technical assistance to accelerate their business plans to launch and expand scalable sourcing models. In parallel, the program will develop a national brand for locally grown food products to improve consumer perceptions and awareness of Nigerian‐grown ingredients.

Made in Nigeria will integrate with public programs to develop Nigerian agriculture, including investments in infrastructure, programs that support smallholder finance, and donor funded value chain programs.

Made in Nigeria will start with a pilot program, but if brought to scale, it can have national impact with the potential to generate a net GDP contribution of ₦75 billion ($500M USD) and provide improved livelihoods to more than 1 million Nigerian farmers. In the long term, this program can increase foreign reserves, decrease the nation’s dependence on agricultural imports, and support the Government of Nigeria’s goal of improving agricultural self sufficiency.

"To me TechnoServe has always been distinguished by its long-term commitment to building cooperatives and businesses from the bottom up in a way that makes sense for the individuals."
