Haiti Update
As an organization dedicated to improving lives around the world, TechnoServe was shocked and saddened by the earthquake in Haiti and its aftermath. We began work in Haiti last year and are thankful for the safety of our team members and partners based in Port-au-Prince: Chantale Pierrelouis, TechnoServe’s team leader, and Yves Andre Sejour, TechnoServe’s business plan competition manager, as well as all of the colleagues who work with us on the HIFIVE project. Eduardo Marques Almeida, a former TechnoServe employee and head of the Inter-American Development Bank in Haiti, and his family are also safe and in our thoughts.
For now we encourage all of our supporters to channel their immediate support to organizations that have a substantial on-the-ground presence and are helping people to stay safe, find food and access health services – organizations like Partners in Health, the Red Cross, CARE and Doctors Without Borders. As there is a massive logistical bottleneck with airplanes full of supplies being refused landing, the best way to support these organizations on the ground is through cash contributions. As for TechnoServe, our efforts to support local entrepreneurs in accessing finance and growing their businesses started in the past few months. While this work will be suspended until the immediate crisis is over, it will be more relevant than ever as we help the country move into the recovery, reconstruction, and rehabilitation. When the time is right, we will seek to play a strong constructive and supportive role to help ensure opportunities are maximized in the rebuilding of Haiti. We will work with local entrepreneurs to rebuild local sectors, such as agriculture, construction, communications and infrastructure services, and to facilitate the employment creation and income generation that the country will surely need.
