Venezuela is one of Latin America’s most urbanized countries, and its economy is heavily dependent on oil revenues. Yet about a third of the population lives on less than $2 a day.

TechnoServe is working to create new opportunities for the urban poor. We implemented our proven business plan competition model to help Venezuelan entrepreneurs turn their small businesses into larger, thriving ventures that create economic opportunities in their communities.

TechnoServe helped 929 entrepreneurs across South America generate more than $16 million in sales through a business plan competition and start-up advice. As part of this program, 44 Venezuelan entrepreneurs received tailored business consulting from TechnoServe.

On The Ground

Developing New Businesses and Markets

TechnoServe ran a business plan competition to help entrepreneurs in the seven regions where Cargill operates in Venezuela to grow their small businesses and encourage income growth and sustainability. The program focused on small businesses that benefit people at the base of the economic pyramid by generating jobs and markets while also increasing the supply of high-quality, affordable goods and services. TechnoServe and its local partners worked with high-potential entrepreneurs to develop effective business plans, while Cargill offered opportunities to participate in its supply chain.
