Kenya Coffee Initiative

Working in partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation since 2007, the Coffee Initiative aims to increase coffee incomes by 64 percent for 6,000 smallholder Kenyan farmers. The country’s climate, geography and soil conditions help it to produce some of the world's best coffee. But sub-optimal farming and processing practices limit the quality and quantity of coffee that smallholders produce, and poor market links limit their ability to sell it. We are working with smallholder coffee farmers to improve their cultivation, milling and marketing practices in order to increase the quality and quantity of their coffee and command higher prices. These interventions will help thousands of farmers to double their incomes over the next few years. TechnoServe recognizes the important role played by women in coffee production and actively encourages their women. Women account for 31 percent of our farmer trainers and female attendance at the farm college averages 42 percent.
