Empowering Young Women Entrepreneurs
The Young Women in Enterprise (YWE) program seeks to empower economically disadvantaged adolescent girls and young women in Nairobi slums, both in-school and out-of-school, by facilitating their entry into safe and productive economic opportunities. The program introduces girls ages 14 to 24 to entrepreneurship concepts, financial literacy life skills and employability. In partnership with the Nike Foundation, TechnoServe has reached over 4,000 girls through YWE since 2006, 35 percent of whom have started small businesses and 25 percent of whom have been linked to wage employment. TechnoServe has also partnered with The Coca-Cola Company’s 5by20 initiative, which seeks to economically empower five million women by the year 2020. Through this collaboration, 300 alumnae from the YWE program have received initial start-up capital support in the form of products, branded merchandise, training and mentoring from Coca-Cola.
