Photo of the Week: Ugandan Cotton Business Thrives

September 06, 2013

A cotton processor is tapping into new markets, creating hundreds of jobs and sourcing from thousands of smallholder farmers in eastern Uganda.

Moses Kwijuka is the finance manager for Mutuma Commercial Agencies Ltd., a cotton processing business in eastern Uganda that employs more than 230 people and buys cotton from 6,000 smallholder farmers. TechnoServe worked with Mutuma to identify a new market opportunity: absorbent cotton wool for the medical industry. Our business advisors helped develop a business plan that would allow Mutuma to make and sell the cotton wool at profit margins three times higher than those for cotton lint.

TechnoServe also helped farmers in the area increase their cotton yields and form farmer business groups. With a productive and organized group of suppliers, and a profitable new product line, Mutuma has become a driver of economic growth for the Kiyunga area.
