Photo of the Week: Indigenous Women Grow Flowers and Incomes

August 09, 2013

A group of Lenca women in Honduras is creating a vibrant future for their families through improved agronomic and business skills.

Today, on International Day of the World’s Indigenous People, TechnoServe joins in recognizing and honoring the rights and contributions of indigenous people around the globe. In Intibucá, Honduras, TechnoServe has worked with a group of indigenous women of Lenca ethnicity to cultivate and sell ornamental flowers. The 12 members of the Floricultura El Clavel cooperative have built two greenhouses and learned crucial business and agronomic practices through the program. With higher productivity and better access to markets, the group has increased its average monthly revenue ninefold.

Presentación Nolasco (pictured at center) and the other women of Floricultura El Clavel are using the income from the flower business to provide nutritious food and health care for their children. “We are better off because we can help our families,” says Presentación.
