Mutuma Commercial Agencies Ltd., a cotton processor in eastern Uganda, employs nearly 250 people and buys cotton from 6,000 smallholder farmers. TechnoServe worked with the business to identify a promising new market opportunity: absorbent cotton wool for the medical industry. We helped develop a business plan that would allow Mutuma to make and sell the wool at profit margins three times higher than those for cotton lint. In June 2011, the company’s new production line began operating. Absorbent cotton wool is now the main driver of Mutuma’s profits, and the business is exploring opportunities in export markets.
Every day, TechnoServe works to help small and growing businesses capitalize on market opportunities that will benefit poor people. Learn more about our work with Mutuma.
