TechnoServe has helped Honduran farmers capitalize on high-quality, native cocoa varieties thanks to a program funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. When the program began, the Honduran cocoa industry had nearly been wiped out by disease, a hurricane and low commodity prices. Today, the industry has been reborn: The TechnoServe program is supporting the planting of more than 2,500 acres of fine cocoa, and other initiatives aim to plant more than 7,400 acres of the local varieties identified with USDA’s support.
