The people of El Petén, Guatemala have long suffered from poverty and malnourishment. But Gladis Rodriguez identified a product she could use to sustainably address her community's difficulties: the Ramon nut. So she started Alimentos NutriNaturales, a women-run organization aiming to produce Ramon nut food products.

Despite a promising start, the organization had trouble turning a profit. TechnoServe recognized Gladis' potential and invited her company to participate in a national business plan competition. As finalists, Gladis and her team were awarded $10,000 in seed capital and new equipment. With these resources, Alimentos cut raw material losses in half and dramatically increased its efficiency, moving towards profitability and a brighter future for Petén.
