Photo of the Week: New Opportunities in Nicaragua

February 10, 2012

Thanks to the U.S. Agency for International Development, 10 groups of TechnoServe-assisted vegetable farmers in Nicaragua will be able to implement projects that will improve the quality of their products. USAID is supporting these projects with more than $200,000 from the Innovation Fund of the ACORDAR program, an initiative to help more than 7,000 Nicaraguan producers increase their incomes and improve the quality of their lives. ACORDAR is supported by USAID and managed by Catholic Relief Services.

With the funds, the farmer groups will introduce new systems and products to help them grow their businesses. For example, the COOPEMET cooperative is purchasing machinery to help them sell cut and packaged pineapple at the local market. The Tomatoya and COPRAHOR cooperatives will buy tractors and other production equipment to improve the quality of their harvest.
