Photo of the Week: Empowering Young Women in Kenya

October 12, 2012

Adolescent girls in the Mathare slum of Nairobi, Kenya, are learning more than algebra and geography at Genesis Joy High School. They’re learning basic business skills to prepare for new economic opportunities. Through the Young Women in Enterprise (YWE) program, TechnoServe is empowering over 3,000 adolescent girls and young women in Kenya’s low-income urban areas to build businesses that transform their lives and their communities.

Adolescent girls in the Mathare slum of Nairobi, Kenya, are learning more than algebra and geography at Genesis Joy High School. They’re learning basic business skills to prepare for new economic opportunities. Through the Young Women in Enterprise (YWE) program, TechnoServe is empowering over 3,000 adolescent girls and young women, both in and out of school, to build businesses that transform their lives and their communities.

Thanks to a grant from the Nike Foundation, YWE participants receive training in life skills, entrepreneurship and financial literacy. TechnoServe organizes YWE business plan competitions and supports the young women in their new enterprises through mentorship and links to financing. As they embrace new economic opportunities and chart their own course, these adolescent girls become less vulnerable to hardships like child marriage and HIV/AIDS.

Yesterday marked the first International Day of the Girl, reminding us of the discrimination and inequality that girls still face. Through social and economic empowerment, girls can become powerful agents of change in their communities.
