The country was once the world’s leading cashew nut producer, until civil war and poor policy decisions destroyed the industry. TechnoServe began working in the late 1990s to help entrepreneurs establish processing plants and train farmers to produce more and better nuts.

Today, Mozambique’s revitalized cashew industry is bringing newfound prosperity to rural communities. Thousands of employees and tens of thousands of small-scale producers are benefiting from higher incomes.

Mozambique has come a long way from its prolonged and destructive civil war. Economic success stories such as the cashew industry help ensure that the country has a secure future. As TechnoServe counts down to Peace Day 2011, we celebrate the connection between economic opportunity and a peaceful world.
