TechnoServe Beneficiary Featured in Half the Sky Documentary

Women and girls are the key to creating meaningful change. A new documentary, Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, shows how courageous women across the world are confronting difficult circumstances in order to create a better future.
Meet Alice Kariuki, a Kenyan farmer with 10 mango trees. Many of her mangoes used to go to waste because Alice did not know the best ways to care for her trees and harvest the fruit. In 2010, TechnoServe began working with Alice through Project Nurture, a partnership with The Coca-Cola Company and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Project Nurture aims to double the fruit incomes of more than 50,000 small-scale mango and passion fruit farmers in Kenya and Uganda.
TechnoServe advisors showed Alice how to keep her trees free of pests and disease and grow high-quality mangoes. We helped connect her to markets for her fruit. These improvements have brought Alice more than just higher income – they’ve brought empowerment. No longer dependent on her husband, Alice manages the farm and the household finances.
