The burdens of poverty make it difficult to focus on anything but meeting basic needs. Education, nutrition and health care all take a backseat when people are struggling just to feed their families.

This event, held in Davos, Switzerland, brings together some of the world’s most influential people: heads of state, chief executives, Nobel Prize winners, government officials, editors and columnists for leading publications. But in recent years, the conference’s high-powered participants have begun paying more attention to those with the least influence.
